Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences - Oxford University Joint Immunology Centre is founded

A memorandum of collaboration between the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (CAMS) and Nuffield Department of Medicine (NDM), Oxford University was signed by Prof. Xuetao Cao, the President of CAMS, and Prof. Andrew Hamilton, the President of Oxford University, in a ceremony held in April 2, 2013. This event marks the establishment of Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences - Oxford University Joint Immunology Centre.
Representatives from the CAMS side includes President Xuetao Cao and Vice President Qimin Zhan, and Prof. Jikuan Sun, Deputy Director of Foreign Affairs Division, Prof. Xue Zhang, Deputy Dean of Graduate School, Prof. Yuanzhi Guan of Educational Administration, Prof.Baihong Gao, Deputy Director of Science and Technology Development, Prof. Chengbin Zhu, Deputy Director of Development and Planning. The Chinese side also includes people from the Institute of Basic Medical Sciences (IBMS), such as Dean Heng Wang and Deputy Dean Limin Li, Prof. Wei He, Director of Department of Immunology. Oxford University representatives include President Andrew Hamilton, Mr. Darren Nash, Head of Administration & Finance, Mr. Jeremy Woodall, Director of University of Oxford China Office, Dr. Mimi Mo also from the same Office, and Researcher Tao Dong of Oxford University. For the ceremony, President Xuetao Cao and President Andrew Hamilton gave speech, respectively. Both of them had a high opinion of the research centre foundation with a hopeful future for the further mutual cooperation. As the Director of the newly established centre, Prof. Wei He and CAMS Vice President Qimin Zhan exchanged opinions with President Andrew Hamilton. All representatives took a photo after the ceremony.
With the aim to activate the collaborative centre both sides discussed details of substantial cooperation. Mr. Darren Nash mentioned that Oxford University had prepared special fund supporting the exchange students and researchers, as well as the research on translational medicine. By explaining the meanings of evidence-based, systemic, integrative and specialized medicine, Prof. Wei He remarked medicine research should hold the idea of new model. He also emphasized human resources, funds, technology and translation. Vice President Qimin Zhan pointed out that currently the funds were not the main issue, and he suggested each side could support own researchers. Furthermore, responding to Director Wei He’s idea, Oxford side put forward the design of target-discovery institute model, based on the integration of genomics, molecular cellular biology, chemistry, and structural biology.
The foundation of Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences - Oxford University Joint Immunology Centre is a new taste to the dialogue and cooperation of Chinese immunology research with international research institutions. It will promote the development of immunology in China and facilitate the global influence of Chinese immunology.
