The 13th CSI Summer School, hosted by the Chinese Society for Immunology (CSI) and co-organized by Ningxia Medical University and the Ningxia Society for Immunology, was held from July 10 to 19, 2026, in Yinchuan, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. Over 90 doctoral students from universities and research institutes across China participated in the 10-day intensive program.
The opening ceremony took place on July 11 at Ningxia Medical University, chaired by Prof. Limin Zheng, Secretary-General of the CSI. During his opening address, Prof. Zhi Yao, Vice President of the CSI, emphasized the Society’s commitment to integrating political guidance with scientific excellence to train next-generation immunologists equipped with both scientific rigor and national ambition. Prof. Yi Yang, Vice President of Ningxia Medical University, and Prof. Hao Wang, President of the Ningxia Society for Immunology, delivered welcome speeches on behalf of the host institutions.
Maintaining its signature format, the program featured 3-hour deep-dive sessions led by 15 leading Chinese immunologists, blending comprehensive lectures with interactive Q&A:
• Basic & Adaptive Immunity: Prof. Sidong Xiong (Soochow University) revealed novel mechanisms of DNA-mediated adaptive immunity; Prof. Yan Shi (Tsinghua University) mapped pattern recognition and innate-to-adaptive immune translation; Prof. Bing Sun (CAS Center for Excellence in Molecular Cell Science) and Prof. Baojun Zhang (Xi'an Jiaotong University) detailed T cell life-cycle regulation and immune cell lineage commitment.
• Tumor Immunology & Microenvironment: Prof. Haiming Wei (University of Science and Technology of China) and Prof. Limin Zheng (Sun Yat-sen University) explored tumor macro- and microenvironment impacts on NK and myeloid cells; Prof. Li Wu (Tsinghua University) highlighted dendritic cell subsets in anti-tumor immunity.
• Metabolism & Cellular Regulation: Prof. Hongyan Wang (CAS Center for Excellence in Molecular Cell Science) introduced cholesterol metabolites as a "fourth signal" in immune control; Prof. Bo Huang (Peking Union Medical College, CAMS) presented phase-separation mechanisms governing ROS scavenging.
• Aging, Infection & Disease Mechanisms: Prof. Yu Zhang (Peking University) and Prof. Hongbo Hu (Sichuan University) shared strategies for thymic reconstitution and reversing immune aging; Prof. Jianqing Xu (Fudan University) outlined viral immune evasion and dual-targeted vaccine design; Prof. Jie Zhou (Tianjin Medical University) uncovered innate immune pathways in neonatal enteritis.
• Translational Medicine & Drug Discovery: Prof. Honglin Wang (Shanghai Jiao Tong University) traced the bench-to-bedside development of the first-in-class small molecule CKBA; Prof. Yi Zhang (First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University) demonstrated closed-loop translational applications, including Super-TILs and engineered CAR-T therapies.
In addition to academic sessions, participants took part in a thematic field excursion on July 14, visiting the Western Xia Mausoleum Archaeological Site Park to explore historical cultural integration and deepen their understanding of Chinese civilization.
The summer school provided participants with a comprehensive view of modern immunology while encouraging a strategic shift toward systems-level thinking and clinically driver research. Graduates expressed their commitment to applying these insights to advance high-quality immunological research in China.
