Hosted by Chinese Society for Immunology (CSI) and organized by Committee for Tumor Immunology & Biotherapy of Chinese Society for Immunology (CSI), the 5th CSI Advanced Course of Cancer Immunotherapy was held during April 12-14 in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province. Over 400 trainees attended the meeting.
CSI President, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Prof. Yuzhang Wu and CSI Chief Supervisor, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Prof. Zhigang Tian gave speeches at the opening ceremony and gave speeches. Starting from the major needs of citizens’ health care, Prof. Wu explained the “3 buildings of Immunology” - basic immunology, clinical immunology and high-tech of biological businesses. Since we have achieved great progresses in the basic immunology, the next steps we should take are to focus on the later 2 aspects, especially on the bio-tech fields. Prof. Tian told stories about the different angles the basic researchers and R&D staffs take while looking at the theories and products, and he addressed concerns about the commercialization of scientific and research findings. He also expressed wishes that this serial training courses will be more successful and give more inspirations to the trainees, which ultimately leads to more progresses in the new production of tumor immunology therapy.
The 2-day lectures began right after the opening ceremony. Lecturers of this meeting were not only Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and CSI Council Members, but also brilliant young immunologists. The 26 invited speakers were: Prof. Xuetao Cao from Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (CAMS), Prof. Yuzhang Wu from Army Medical University, Prof. Bing Sun from CAS Center for Excellence in Molecular Cell Science, Prof. Bo Huang from Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences & Peking Union Medical College, Prof. Yiwei Chu from Fudan University, Prof. Yan Shi, Prof. Li Wu, Prof. Hai Qi and Prof. Yangxin Fu from Tsinghua University, Prof. Yi Zhang from the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University, Prof. Chen Dong from Westlake University, Prof. Zusen Fan from Institute of Biophysics of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Prof. Limin Zheng and Prof. Zhi Wang from Sun Yat-Sen University, Prof. Lilin Ye from Army Medical University, Prof. Guideng Li and Prof. Lianjun Zhang from SuZhou Institute of Systems Medicine, CAMS, Prof. Jingwei Ma from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Prof. Liufu Deng, Prof. Bing Su and Prof. Qiang Zou from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Prof. Haopeng Wang from ShanghaiTech University, Prof. Ping Gao from Southern Medical University, Prof. Mingyao Liu from East China Normal University, Prof. Fang Hua from Institute of Materia Medica, CAMS, Prof. Jin Hou from Naval Medical University.
The topics of lectures included current status and progresses of new drug research and development, progresses & challenges in immunotherapy, basic theories and hot issues of T cells, tumor metabolism, enhancing anti-tumor immunity by modulating antigen presenting cell function, long-lived humoral immune memory, tumor immunotherapy strategies based on analysis of clinical problems, new subgroups of innate immune cells and immune regulation of intestinal tumors, molecular control of CD8 T cell fates in cancer, the application prospects of lithium ions in various clinical diseases including tumors, artificial intelligence-driven CAR-T design, gene editing and cell therapy.
At the end of each day, CSI General Secretary, Prof. Bo Huang and CSI Executive Council Member, Prof. Limin Zheng gave concluding speeches by reviewing the whole lectures and repointing out key questions. They reiterated the wishes from Porf. Wu and Porf. Tian that CSI should make this serial training course a real “Whampoa Military Academy” to cultivate immunological talents.
